Woodland Barn Conversion

A large portal-framed barn, nestled within modern agricultural barns, a farmhouse, and a bordering U-shaped range of traditional farm buildings on a sprawling 0.28 hectares of rural land in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), stands as a focal point for the site's continuing development.

The design involves partially demolishing a range of barns and converting the remainder into a single dwellinghouse, placing a high value on preserving the barn's maturing agricultural setting and maintaining its integrity within the farmstead.

Downsizing by nearly a third in overall footprint, the portal frame will provide a modernised twist through an intervention of materials and features selected to respond to the context and qualities of the countrified setting. Zinc roof, vertical timber cladding, brise soleil over windows/fixed glazing, alongside an internal steel frame structure, aid its contemporary improvement. Detailing of apertures and facade treatment for solar shading add interest to the conventional building form.

The footprint of the removed structures equips the dwelling with a large private garden area, bordered by new planting, delineating a new residential curtilage providing an enclosure from the retained farmyard area beyond. This assists its physical separation and enhances the setting from an adjacent listed barn, positively increasing its surrounding openness.
