Traditional Cotswold Pub Restoration

A traditional Cotswold pub nestled on the edge of the pretty village of Salford, near Chipping Norton, The Black Horse dates back to the 1800s and, prior to our client’s purchase, had fallen into a state of disrepair; requiring of a comprehensive, and sensitive, programme of modernisation and improvement to bring it back to its former glory.

Working closely with our client, Lionhearth Group, and their trusted construction and interiors teams, a well-mannered and thoughtfully executed refurbishment and upgrade programme concluded in August last year, with The Black Horse opening their doors in September 2023. To quote the team: “The Black Horse is a tribute to the classic British pub, valuing fantastic local food, quality drinks, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere”, which we wholeheartedly feel has been realised.

Preserving the historical features of the property was key throughout. Externally, the pub has been completely transformed, with restorations to the roof and stone façade, new hand-painted signage, outdoor lighting and landscaped gardens with terraced seating, a feature log wall and, the pièce de résistance, Salford Cottage – a private self-contained ‘pied-à-terre’ for overnight guests.

Internally, the layout has been reconfigured to improve the functionality and flow of the space. Works include re-siting of the bar to the rear – creating a cohesive and spacious dining area – while providing ample space for accessible bathroom facilities, and an extended kitchen. The décor and furnishings encapsulate the refined elegance of the modern dining experience, while retaining the character of the property. A deep maroon and forest green palette with custom-made leather banquette seating pairs beautifully with the dark antique wood, exposed and carefully repaired Cotswold stone walls, reinstated original fireplace, oak floors, and a hand-curated artwork scheme.

Securing the longevity of this beautiful, historic building and much-loved public house was a great privilege, and we look forward to seeing The Black Horse go from strength to strength, as well as progressing with our third project for the group: reviving the Grade-II Listed public house, The Cock Inn, in Combe.
