North Oxfordshire Inverted House Interiors

A replacement dwelling – where a rather uninspiring and badly maintained 1900’s cottage once stood – this bright and modern family home, in a beautiful North Oxfordshire village, has been creatively designed to maximise the verdant, mature tree-lined site, natural daylight and long-distance views across the county, while utilising natural materials and following low energy passive principles throughout.

Requiring a delicate design approach and careful planning negotiations – after the contemporary design initially met with opposition – successful consent was achieved through a Permitted Development application and Planning Appeal.

An inverted house design, with living accommodation located at first floor, takes advantage of the incredible countryside views and south westerly light, while locating sleeping accommodation at ground floor – wrapped in a stone outer shell – keeps bedrooms cool in the summer months. At first floor, a lightweight timber construction with automated, external shuttering controls light, heat, and privacy from the quiet lane running adjacent to the property.

The property incorporates a number of green energy saving measures, from a super insulated external fabric, triple glazed windows and MVHR system, to low energy sensor lighting and rainwater harvester / grey water system.

Internally, the bright, light-filled and open-plan spaces – including a large central hallway, that seamlessly connects exterior and interior with a direct line of sight from entranceway through to back garden - have been finished in a clean and minimalist style. Externally, a carefully curated material palette of natural limestone and larch timber cladding create interest, texture and articulation to the building form – ensuring the contemporary house sensitively assimilates within the rural, village setting.
