Modern Dutch Barn

A replacement dwelling – where an uninspiring bungalow once stood – this modern interpretation of a Dutch barn on the outskirts of a small settlement in West Oxfordshire has been meticulously designed to maximise the generous plot and enhance the natural surroundings.

The barrel-vaulted structure, adorned with black corrugated metal cladding, pays homage to the traditional barns of the area while creating interest, texture and articulation to the building form, and delivering an 123% increase to the original floor area, inclusive of garage and store.

This striking new home demonstrates that modern architecture can harmonise within a Conservation Area and coexist adjacent to a locally Listed heritage asset by integrating traditional forms with contemporary design elements. The use of high-quality, durable local materials reflects the vernacular and environment, blending seamlessly with large, glazed openings to create a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Glazing to the rear of the barn beautifully connects the living spaces with the south-facing garden, while the restrained apertures on the north side ensure privacy and respect the street scene.

Externally, the detailed landscape design enhances the immediate gardens and local biodiversity, providing screening from neighbouring properties and public footpaths. Internally, the home boasts bright, light-filled open-plan spaces, including a large central kitchen, dining, and living area that overlooks the stunning gardens. Finished in a minimalist style, the space features a systemKA kitchen from Kitchen Architecture, ensuring both functionality and elegance. Contemporary bathrooms and thoughtfully curated materials throughout further elevate the home’s modern appeal.
