Grade II Listed Public House Reimagined

A respectful revival of Cotswold heritage — this carefully reimagined public house blends historic charm with modern hospitality, enhancing a listed village landmark through thoughtful restoration, improved accessibility, and refined contemporary extensions.

Delivering public houses that nestle within the heart of communities across the Cotswolds, the Lionhearth Group fuses traditional charm with fine modern dining in traditional buildings with contemporary arrangements. Located within the charming village of Combe, home to rich history and honey-coloured Cotswold Stone, the site hosts a Grade II listed building overlooking the western edge of Combe Green. It forms part of the larger Cotswold AONB, a protected landscape area, and the Combe Conservation area.

Notable works to the existing building were undertaken during the 20th century, removing original features and leaving areas in a poor state of repair. It hosted an unsightly extension restricting access to the rear garden and carpark, plus a convoluted internal layout that wasted important dining and circulation space. As such, it quickly became evident that the proposals should extensively preserve and enrich both the historical forms of the building whilst respecting the setting of its heritage assets. Likewise, to align with Lionhearth's brief: to be welcoming, unify internal and external areas, increase the number of dining covers, and prioritise disabled access and all-around usability of the public house.

The proposal aimed to evolve the dwelling's internal spaces to provide modern living by rearranging and enhancing comfort levels throughout, rectifying heat loss issues typical for buildings of this age and construction. Moreover, a lawful development certificate was achieved for a single-storey ancillary. The structure, notably two interconnected contemporary forms, is located south of the existing outdoor swimming pool, replacing the smaller pool house. Consequently, supplying more meaningful and ample space for games, living, exercise, changing, and plant/storage functions.

In succession, the development gifts supplemental covers and improved functionality through a replacement single-storey rear extension and internal alterations. The subservient element includes a standing-seam zinc flat roof, exposed timber beams, a feature stone wall, and timber-framed full-height glazing. Contemporary in form but traditional in its materials and building techniques. These materials have been sourced locally to articulate well with the existing vernacular and selected for their sustainability, robustness, and longevity facets. The relocation of the existing bar and commercial kitchen delivered additional floor space for greater circulation efficiency and dining covers. Removing existing non-original partition walls on both the first and second floors alongside some spatial reconfiguration facilitated the WCs, relocated kitchen, cold storeroom, staff facilities, plant room, and storage space.
