A replacement dwelling, where a series of architecturally rather unremarkable buildings once stood – including a 1970s chalet-style bungalow – this extensive, high quality (yet low impact) farmhouse, situated in a secluded spot in the heart of the Cotswold countryside, transforms and enhances the site, delivering first-class accommodation of 26,000sqft, with detached garaging, agricultural and automotive barns.
A varied vernacular landscape presents a range of styles and scales, from modern farmhouses to ornate manor houses – most predominantly traditional in their nature – and careful consideration was taken to ensure respect of, and positive contribution towards, the site and the surrounding context.
The principal elevation is symmetrical in composition and has a simple arrangement with Georgian style proportions and openings. Comprising one and two storey forms, a pitched roof framed by a chimney at each book end, and windows with stone mullions and inset casements – a detail common in the surrounding area – the house stands well-mannered and balanced in its context.
A carefully considered orientation takes advantage of key vistas out to the gardens, and views beyond, while optimising natural daylight for principle living areas. A restricted palette of high quality, durable and local materials – including coursed ironstone, stone roof tiles and glass – offers a sympathetic response to the site, reflective of the local vernacular.
