Cotswold Country Retreat

Westwell Barns – a former piggery located in a secluded spot just outside the curtilage of a small West Oxfordshire village in the Cotswold countryside – required a delicate design scheme and careful planning negotiations to create an exemplar, contemporary country retreat.

The 35,000sqft development – in the main, concealed by a well-established tree lined perimeter – combines both residential and agricultural materiality and forms. A traditional courtyard composition has been developed to create a structure that is broken in its mass and appearance – punctuated with contemporary elements and detailing – to give the feel of a traditional farmstead reimagined for modern use.

Worked closely with our client – while refencing the local vernacular – a carefully curated palette of Cotswold natural stone and traditional Cardinal slate is utilised for principal areas, complemented with vertical ‘hit & miss’ timber cladding, Ashlar stone, standing seam zinc cladding and Crittal-style glazing elsewhere.

Designed to utilise the site’s orientation to optimise long-distance views, natural daylight and solar gain - other environmental credentials include the integration of low energy fittings and appliances, MVHR unit and renewable energy sources throughout. An extensive landscaping strategy ensures the safeguarding of, and enhancement in the rural scenery and local biodiversity.
