This stunning commercial property – located in London’s Chalk Farm Conservation Area – was originally constructed in the 1930s as a local petrol station, that provided invaluable support for planes during the Second World War.
A full commercial refurb and conversion scheme – with fluidity of movement and retention of light, central to the design – saw the reconfiguration of the space to create an art gallery, reading room and studios at ground floor, with open plan office spaces, sound-proofed recording studios and additional meeting room suites at first and second floors.
A modern-industrial interior presents new and altered apertures framed with Crittall-style glazing; a feature carried through to the ground-floor façade – adding interest on approach and opening the building up to the public at street level – as well as internal partitioning throughout. New mechanical ventilation systems and the removal of suspended ceilings allows for exposed services, aiding the perception of increased room heights and generous and airy working spaces.
External works include a carefully restored roof – with newly integrated roof lights that introduce natural light deep into the plan – brick façade, parapet signage and a newly cobbled forecourt – a nod to the heritage of the building, which sits set back from the road.
The space has played host to a wealth of established and emerging artists and education programmes since completion, realising the Company’s goal of bringing more people the chance to engage with and enjoy the arts.
